If the alarm is going off right now
Stop putting water into the system. No laundry, no dishwasher, no showers, and keep flushing to a minimum. Every gallon you send down the drain while the pump is dead is a gallon that has nowhere to go.
Do not silence the alarm and go back to bed. The silence button quiets the buzzer, not the problem. The chamber keeps filling either way, and the amount of usable time you have left depends entirely on how much water goes down the drain between now and when we arrive.
Then call us. A high-water alarm typically buys you hours, not days – and much less than that with a full household still using water normally.
If the basement is taking on water
If the sump pump has stopped and water is rising, keep clear of anything electrical that is standing in it. Do not wade into a flooded basement to reach a plug or a panel. Cut power at the breaker if you can reach it safely and dryly, and call us.
Storm-season failures are rarely the pump alone. Just as often it is a stuck check valve, a discharge line that has frozen or clogged, or a float that has jammed against the side of the pit. All of that is fixable, usually the same day.
